Description
Discovered at Duncan & Davies Nursery in New Plymouth, New Zealand, Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Sunspray’ is a very attractive upright, informal pyramidal selection of golden Hinoki cypress featuring bright, creamy-golden swirled sprays of soft-textured foliage. A somewhat slow grower adding maybe 6 inches in height per year, Sunspray might reach 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide at its base at 10 years of age. Its smaller stature makes it an excellent fit as a distinctive and colorful accent specimen for small to medium size garden spaces, home foundation plantings and containers. A carefree and long-lived plant that never requires pruning.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Sunspray Golden Dwarf Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use as an accent specimen in smaller garden spaces, containers and home foundation plantings or in spaced groupings where space allows. Use two plants to accentuate an entryway. Also excellent in containers that can be situated on patios, desks, terraces and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, conifer gardens, yellow/gold theme gardens, and rock gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Sunspray Golden Dwarf Hinoki Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to part sun. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day for best foliage color. It is tolerant of dry soil conditions when established. Maintenance is minimal with little to no pruning required. That said, it can be pruned annually in late winter for size control.

I swore off evergreens—arborvitae, juniper, etc.—long ago. I like shrubs that bloom with
splashy color. But the hinoki cypress really caught my eye. The plants arrived in superb
condition, and I planted them the day after receipt. Thus far, both are doing splendidly, and
oh, my, they certainly are cute little fellas.———————————–Thanks for the kind words and awesome review! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
